Tales Of Brave Ulysses

East of the Sun, West of the Moon

I’m actually surprised I pulled this one out of my ass. Dianne asked me tonight where the phrase, “Damn the torpedoes” came from. It took me about five seconds to pull the answer out of my skull. Admiral Farragut said that during the Civil War, the Battle of Mobile Bay. Damn, I’m good. Did I happen to mention Quiz Nite is coming up next week? I’m gunning for top honors this time around.

Name the fort that was firing at Farragut when he said that. Bonus points for naming the island that fort is situated upon. No fair Googling!

    fort sumter, sumter island….? wes

no fair mobile-bay boy…you’ve probably taken a ride on the camel on that wee island…

  3. Thomas Says:

Umm, was it the Isle of Shemp?

  4. CC Says:

Oh yes, I’ve ridden that camel and curled my toes in the sand right there at Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island.

During one visit, they were performing a weekend long reinactment, which was pretty cool. They even had a “ship battle” out on the water viewable from the fort. Only drawback was the battling ships had outboard motors.
