Tales Of Brave Ulysses
East of the Sun, West of the Moon
Lot’s of people were talking about the first murder of the year, a woman whose body was found at the Sella Bay overlook on Thursday, a day after she disappeared in Tamuning. A man was arrested yesterday in connection with the murder. He was a former employee of the woman, and apparently owed her a lot of money. Sad really that she was killed over something as trivial as money.

Regarding the first murder of the year—the murder of “Un Chong Kim,” of which the accused is “Alvin Nash Quinata”— there have been a lot of interesting theories about who did it and why. I would call them conspiracy theories. I love conspiracy theories! One is that the murder was really done by a US marine from Okinawa. Another was that it was a racist hate crime. The victim, Un Chong Kim, is Korean. And the accused, Alvin Nash Quinata, is Chamorro. And yet another theory is that all “Quinatas” from Umatac are villains. To read about these theories go to http://www.guampdn.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007701220302 and read the messages that are posted at the bottom of the page right after the PDN article. That is where I read and learned about these theories. Be sure to click “View All Comments,” at the bottom of the page, to see all the posts as there are so many posts that not all of them are shown on that page. Or to go directly to the page that lists all of the comments, go to http://forums.guampdn.com/viewtopic.php?t=2987 . And at the bottom be sure to click on “2” or “Next” to go to the next page which shows the comments that are not show on page one. Wow! I love conspiracy theories! The one that the murder was really done by a American solider from Okinawa is far fetched. The one about all Umatac Quinatas being villains is just pig headed. And as for the one about it being a hate crime, that is most interesting and possible, but is our small family-friendly island really capable of producing hate crimes?

I took a class back in college about the source of urban legends and conspiracy theories and I learned that urban legends and conspiracy theories are created as a result of fears and anxieties that are currently found in the population. So the theory that the murder was really done by a US solider from Okinawa is rooted in our fear and anxiety of what will happen when all those US soldiers from Okinawa that are scheduled to be transferred to Guam finally come. And the theory that the murder was due to racism and was a hate crime is rooted in the fear and anxiety over the great increase in recent years of the number of Koreans and Filipinos on Guam, and the increase in influence and power of those two respective groups. And the theory that all Quinatas from Umatac are bad is rooted in our fear and anxiety of the less developed and isolated southern half of Guam. Seventy-five percent of Guam’s population lives in the northern half, where as only twenty-five percent of Guam’s population lives in the southern half. People say the folks in the south are uneducated, violent and hilly billies.
