    He was called ‘Deep Throat’ for exactly the reason you suspect: Woodward promised never to reveal his source, and to never quote anything the source said, even anonymously. Anything the source told Woodward was to be followed up and validated from other sources, often suggested by this covert source. This is called a ‘deep background’ source in journalism. When Woodward explained this to his editor Howard Simons. While Woodward called his source ‘My Friend,’ Simons took to calling him ‘Deep Throat’ after a pornographic movie featuring Linda Lovelace that was burning up the nation in 1972.

    I remember all the hoopla about Deep Throat. It lasted for years. Then I remember a tell-all book by Linda Lovelace. Something about her being coerced to do the film.
