While listening to NPR’s Performance Today this morning, I got a chance to hear a previously unknown Bach aria which was discovered in a box of birthday cards in Germany two weeks ago. The box was full of effluvia from a birthday party for Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar, given in 1713. Amongst the birthday cards a conservator found this piece of music written by Bach as a birthday tribute to his employer, the duke. The box was spared from a fire that gutted the Anna Amalia Library because it was away in Leipzig being conserved. What a fortuitous discovery.
