I was actually on a flight coming into Japan that was struck by lightning too. There was a resounding boom and a flash of blue light was emitted throughout the cabin. Airplanes are made to withstand it but it does not make the experience any less scary. I’ve heard about hitting air pockets though, and those sound worse than lighting.

    Hi Jess,

I’ve heard about the air pockets too (or is it really wind shear?). Anyway I have a friend who hit one of those on the way from the states to Europe and she has refused to fly since. That was 30 years ago. She said the plane must have fallen over 1,000 feet. Everything was on the ceiling. Scary!!

I don’t think they happen a lot. I was on that plane when it got hit, and the I was confident that they get hit often, so as I looked to the flight attendent for reasurance, she told me (the flight attendant) after 20+ years of flying, she never has been hit by lightning before. But none the less, I am here toeday, and still fly from time to time
