More Space Probes On Deck

A couple more exciting space probes are gearing up for launch in the next few months.

  • The European Space Agency’s Venus Express is ready for launch on October 26. Modeled after the agency’s successful Mar Express probe, Venus Express will head to our inner neighbor in the solar system to explore the secrets of that hellish inferno of a world.
  • From blazing inferno to frigid iceball – Heading in the opposite direction of Venus Express is the New Horizons mission to Pluto, which just shipped to Kennedy Space Center from its construction facility. The spacecraft will be mated to the lift vehicle and undergo final testing prior to a launch window in January 2006.
  • Speaking of the Mars Express mission, ESA recently decided to extend the mission of that probe for an additional Martian year.
