On the first Saturday of April and October of every year, the Trinity test site in White Sands, New Mexico is open to the public. Interesting factoid I learned from this essay: all tobacco on the planet is radioactive now. Tobacco readily absorbs polonium 210, one of the radioactive ingredients of fallout. For a pack a day smoker, the additional radioactivity is like several hundred chest x-rays a year.
