It is probably worth remembering that while this was happening in New York five years ago today;
this was going on in a schoolroom in Florida.
Before it disappears completely down the memory hole, go take a look at the full excruciating five minutes that he sat there, fiddling while Rome burned.
Incredibly both Mars rovers are stilling rolling around on the surface of the red planet, years past their expected lifetimes. The Opportunity rover is just about to reach a massive crater christened “Victoria” by the NASA engineers, while Spirit is still trundling around the rocky hills of Gusev Crater.
Both rovers landed on Mars in January 2004, and were expected to last 90 days at the most. It’s now approaching three years that they’ve been exploring the dusty plains and hills of Mars, finding evidence of a water rich past on the frozen desert world. I am really impressed by the durability of these trusty robots. They’re like Martian Energizer Bunnies, they just keep going and going.
